(S)heroes Faces
Elle and I walk past this mural almost twice per day. A mural of heroes’ faces that are not found in mainstream media, and usually not in textbooks written by middle-class white men. I try to name a different face and their accomplishments each time we go by. I know that schools in San Francisco will educate her on these faces and not just because it is a certain month of the year. However, I fear…what if we move? We’re in this amazing, progressive bubble of San Francisco. I already feel a heavy pressure to expose her to the history and stories of what mainstream U.S. deems the “Other,” but having to do it in opposition to the institution of education and her peers is always something in the back of my mind.
