Potty Training 101

Alright you all!! I have been trying to hold off on potty training until summer since I'm busy with ALL THE THINGS! However, Elle is clearly not interested in waiting. Below you'll find everything you need to successfully potty train your child. I have personally potty trained MANY children when I worked with preschoolers with autism in their home to support life skills. Below is the strategy I always have used and will use with Elle.

Things you'll need:

1. Timer - Any timer will do, but I suggest this visual timer so you can use it for EVERYTHING else too (e.g. time until bedtime, how long until clean up time, etc.)

2. These data sheets - taking data may seem annoying or unneeded. Trust me. Take the data.

3. Sticker chart and stickers. Download a free one here

4. Highly preferred prize for completing sticker chart. Make sure your child ONLY has access to this during potty training.

5.  Depending on your flooring: pee pads, tarp, cleaning supplies, etc.

6. A kid potty or potty seat that attaches to your toilet+stool. This is what we use: Potty + Stool

Do's:

  1. Wait until your child shows appropriate signs that they are ready to be potty trained.

  2. Give TONS of praise for every small success (e.g. pulled pants down, sat on potty, waited, etc.)

  3. Have a structured routine.

    Step 1: Pull down pants

    Step 2: Sit on toilet

    Step 3: wait

    Step 4: Wipe

    Step 5: Pull pants up

    Step 6: Flush

    Step 7: Wash hands

    Step 8: STICKER

- Pick a time interval (e.g. Every 15 minute, 30 minute, 45 minute, or 60 minute) - The shorter the interval (15 min) the less likely for accidents, but the more work it will be for you). We will be doing 30 minute intervals at first. This is why it’s so important to take data. It will help you determine if you need to shorten or lengthen the interval time.

Don'ts:

- Never punish, embarrass, or tease your child for having an accident!! Ever!
